Substitutability and Competition in the Dixit-Stiglitz Model

چکیده
Substitutability and Competition in the Dixit-Stiglitz Model The effects of competition on growth are analyzed in the recent literature by comparing economies with the same market structure but different degrees of substitutability. In this note, we show that in a general equilibrium model with monopolistic competition à la DixitStiglitz the effect of substitutability on the allocation of resources is independent of the associated change in competition. Higher substitutability increases welfare, output and productivity because resources shift towards the most productive sectors. However, since markups are equal across sectors, changes in market power do not affect the relative price of consumption goods, implying that the induced changes in market power do not have any direct effect on equilibrium allocations. Chapter 21 a Macroeconomic Model of Monopolistic Competition: the Dixit-stiglitz Framework
In perfect competition, there is a sense in which no supplier makes any purposeful, meaningful decision regarding the price that it sets. Rather, because of perfect substitutability between all products (recall the assumption of homogenous goods in a perfectly-competitive market), firms are all price-takers. A view of firms as price-takers is incompatible with the notion that we would now like ...
متن کاملMonopolistic competition Equilibrium and optimality*
Since the publication of Chamberlin's book [The Theory of Monopolistic Competition (1933)], there has been sorne controversy about what is implied by adopting the Monopolistic Competition point of view [see for example Stigler (1968, p. 320) vs. Samuelson (1958)]. The first formal model of Monopolistic Competition is due to Spence (1976). He showed that if the utility function of the sole consu...
متن کاملThe Comparison Between Ad Valorem and Unit Taxes under Monopolistic Competition
This paper shows that the welfare dominance of ad valorem over unit taxes under imperfect competition, extends to the Dixit-Stiglitz framework with differentiated products, entry and love of variety. This contrasts against findings by Anderson et al. (J Public Econ, 2001) made in a similar framework, but under Bertrand competition.
متن کاملMultiproduct Firms and Market Structure: An Explorative Application to the Product Life Cycle
We extend the standard Dixit-Stiglitz model of imperfect competition to allow for multiproduct firms. We fully endogenise market structure by determining both the number of varieties per firm and the number of firms in the industry. A crucial feature of the model is that firms internalise the effects of both intraand inter-firm competition in making their product range and pricing decisions. Th...
متن کاملFinding the Sweet Spot in the City: a Monopolistic Competition Approach
We propose a general equilibrium model to study the spatial inequality of consumers and firms within a city. Our mechanics rely on Dixit and Stiglitz monopolistic competition framework. The firms and consumers are continuously distributed across a two-dimensional space, there are iceberg-type costs both for goods shipping and workers commuting (hence firms have variable marginal costs based on ...
